Copycat “Danimals Smoothie”

IMG_8448I know how it goes. You walk through the grocery store and your kids find EVERY food that has Mickey Mouse, Elsa or Sponge Bob on it and they ask for EVERY single one. No matter how many times I say “No”, they keep asking. I guess I can’t blame them since I know they got their relentless negotiation skills from ME! The thing is, I know they actually don’t even really love these products (like the Danimals smoothies) all that much. They just like the idea of them. Honestly, they’ve gotten so used to the way real food tastes without all the added sugar that when I splurge or give in now and then and buy them the “kids yogurt” they say it tastes gross.

While two of my kids will eat plain Greek yogurt with fruit and honey on top, my oldest doesn’t love it. If I blend it all together and make it look like a “kids smoothie”, then I don’t have to listen to the complaining. And isn’t that what it’s really all about? Making it through the day with as little whining as possible? Yes? Yes.

Ok, so here’s my simple recipe. Use any fruit you like. You can even use half the juice and water and spoon it into reusable jelly jars for them to eat with a spoon instead of the Trix yogurt. Who needs food coloring when you have berries?!

What you need:

  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt (or non Greek if you prefer)
  • 1 cup strawberries
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1/2 cup fresh squeezed orange juice
  • 1/2 cup water

Blend it all together. Pour into a cup or a reusable milk bottle and watch them sip, slurp and smile.
